The Power of Reading Together

Next week we are excited to celebrate Read Across America week- a time dedicated to building a love of reading in children of all ages. This nationwide initiative, launched by the National Education Association, reminds us that reading is more than just an academic skill; it is a powerful tool for connection, growth, and lifelong learning. As we prepare for a week filled with books and activities, it’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on why reading aloud to children matters so much.

According to the Child Mind Institute, reading to your child supports development in multiple important ways:

  • Builds language and vocabulary: Children hear richer and more varied language than in everyday conversation, strengthening comprehension and communication skills.

  • Develops background knowledge: Books introduce new ideas, places, and experiences that prepare children for classroom learning.

  • Supports emotional growth: Stories help children understand feelings, practice empathy, and learn how others experience the world.

  • Strengthens connection: Reading together creates meaningful one-on-one time and supports healthy brain development.

Reading doesn’t need to be long or formal to make a difference! Families can support literacy at home by:

  • Reading for just a few minutes each day- consistency matters more than length.

  • Starting early- even infants benefit from hearing language and rhythm.

  • Asking simple questions about the story or talking about characters’ feelings.

  • Connecting events in the book to your child’s own experiences.

  • Embracing repetition- rereading favorite books builds confidence and mastery.

  • Continuing to read aloud even after your child begins reading independently.

Reading time is a special time. During Read Across America week, take a little extra time to read together: it helps your child grow, explore, and enjoy the magic of books!
